Skellig

Rock of Ages
They say you haven´t seen Kerry until you´ve seen Skellig Mhichíl. It was here, eight miles from the coast, that monks landed in the 6th century and built their monastery 600 dizzying feet up on the steep rock. Bird´s eggs, feathers, and seal steaks were what they traded with passing ships for essentials such as tools and vellum. The monks moved to Ballinskelligs, on the mainland, in the 12th century.
Tours to see Skelligs Rock are arranged by Skellig Cruises
The Skelligs Centre, at Valentia, will enlighten you about the history, the amazing bird life, and the lighthouse. The excellent exhibits here are augmented by an audiovisual show with stunning photography. |
