The Great Blasket Islands
The isolation and hardship of island life in the Atlantic Ocean made the Blasket Islanders a unique community. Thanks to the encouragement of visiting scholars, their accounts of daily toil, shipwrecks, storytelling, and all the joys and tragedies of island life were collected and published in what have become classics of Irish literature. Sadly, relentless population decline forced the final evacuation of the Great Blasket in 1953. But the Blasket Island Centre at Dunquin keeps the flame burning. Of particular interest are the unique collection of photographs and the stunning audiovisual show. |
